Willington is located on the A690 approximately 8 miles from Durham City and the A1(M) in the County of Durham. This once thriving and close knit former coal mining community formed the Greater Willington Town Council in 2007.

Based in the High Street at Willington the Council currently has eleven elected members covering the communities of Sunnybrow, Page Bank, Oakenshaw and Willington with administrative support provided by the Town Clerk, Mrs Helen Cogdon.

Councillor Fraser Tinsley is the Town Mayor who has made growing the Council’s reputation a top priority starting with a move to a new office.

Mayor Tinsley, a chartered town planner born and raised in the town, said: “The council started in 2007 and our aim now is to continue its good work, increase what it does for the town and address the challenges facing our community.”

The Town Council meets the second Tuesday in the month. Members of the public are welcome to observe council meetings and there is a Public Participation Item on each Agenda where Parish residents can speak.
