A short service was held at the George Burdon McKean VC MC MM memorial site on Monday 11th November 2024 to mark Armistice Day. Town Mayor Councillor Dorothy Hales welcomed attendees.

Wreaths were laid by County Councillor Olwyn Gunn and Town Mayor Councillor Dorothy Hales and Consort Councillor Charles Hales.

Following the 2-minute silence, Councillor Emma Berry raised the Tricolor, Councillor Charles Hales raised the Pre 1963 Canadian Flag and Councillor Ursula McArdle raised the Union Flag, additionally supported by Councillor Stephen Jackson and Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Angela Smith.

Pupils from our four Primary Schools and Parkside Academy shared the reading of the poignant poem ‘For The Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon.

GWTC would like to thank Our Lady and St Thomas Catholic Primary School, St Stephen's C of E Primary School, Sunnybrow Primary School, Willington Primary School, and Parkside Academy for supporting this event. Thanks especially to the Venerable Shirley T Griffiths for leading the prayers.

Happy Halloween

Everyone had a great time at the Halloween Disco on Monday night. It was another sell out event and we had lots of attendees who scared us all.

Thank you to Geoff at The Disco Co for entertaining us all night with his selection of spooky tunes, Willington WMC for allowing us to use their premises and for providing the children with hot dogs and also a huge thank you to everyone who came along.

It was a very hard task to pick the winners of the children's best fancy dress. Everyone looked frighteningly good. We even had some adults who got in on the action.

Family Fun Day

Saturday 28th September 2024

<>

Greater Willington Town Council would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came and supported the Family Fun Day. It was amazing to see so many families enjoying the activities, as well as the ice cream and popcorn which was provided free of charge. We were lucky with the weather, the sun shone on Willington.

Jack Drum Arts came along and got involved in the event. Runaway Samba gave three fantastic performances and Brian the Lion paraded throughout the day.  They kept everyone engaged.

Our MP, Mary Kelly Foy and her team, came along to support this event and spent some time talking to residents. They thoroughly enjoyed their time with us. Thank you Mary and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Events like this would not happen without the support we have had. William Clark (shows) gave a generous donation, Believe Housing contributed towards the cost of the North East Play Bus and Point North provided funding towards the cost of the inflatables. The remainder of the cost was provided by GWTC.

A really big thank you to our volunteers, your help was amazing and to the following who have helped to make the day such a great occasion; William H Clark Fairground and friends, North East Play Bus, Cave Pod, Jack Drum Arts, Blackberry Donkeys, The Fun Experts (Inflatables), Caitlin’s Sweet Treats and Cakes, Nails & Beauty by Ruby, Doreen’s Crafts, Food Vendors and other local businesses that were open on the day, including The Bait Room and Coffea Espression.

A special mention to Dawn and Tia from the Police and Crime Commissioners office, the police cadets, our local police and the fire brigade.

To everyone who donated towards the raffle including; Foster Opticians, Barlow’s Barbers, Post Office, Caitlin’s Sweet Treats and Cakes, The Best Chippy, All in Bloom, Angelic Nails, Nails & Beauty by Ruby, The Queens Head, Coffea Espression, Briton & Robson, Get Glam Beauty, The Co-Operative, Heavenly Bliss, The Premier, Nailed It by Neelie, The Copper Mine, The Quarry Tea House and Emmys, also staff and town councillors, thank you.
