Big Brass Bash Brings Music and Community Spirit to Willington

Willington came alive with music on Wednesday 15 July 2026 as the Big Brass Bash took over the Town Green for an evening of live entertainment and community celebration.

This free event brought music into the heart of the town, giving all residents the opportunity to enjoy an evening together in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

Willington Banner at the 140th Durham Miners' Gala on Saturday, 11 July 2026

Town Mayor, Councillor Dorothy Hales, Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Angela Smith, and Town Councillor Judith Guthrie were honoured to parade with the Willington Banner at the 140th Durham Miners' Gala on Saturday, 11 July 2026.

The Durham Miners' Gala, affectionately known as "The Big Meeting", is one of the region's most important annual events, celebrating the rich mining heritage, community spirit and traditions of County Durham. Thousands of people gathered in Durham to watch the colourful procession of banners and brass bands through the city streets.

Representing Greater Willington, the councillors proudly accompanied the Willington Banner, joining communities from across the former coalfield in commemorating the legacy and sacrifices of generations of miners and their families. Their participation reflected the Town Council's continued commitment to preserving and celebrating the area's proud mining history.
